Week 2 Thoughts

This week, one of the discussion questions was about wiki pitfalls. The only pitfalls I see with wikis are 1) keeping the site safe and secure especially protecting students in grades K-12 and 2) teachers allow their students a degree of Independence while teaching them Internet safety and allowing them to develop their wiki.

The second discussion question focused on a wiki project which I will do. We had to submit 3 possible projects. My first is for NYC DOE school secretaries in which they will submit their best practices, the second is for parents of high school students who are transitioning into adulthood and the third, also for school secretaries goes over leave of absences. I have decided to go with project number 2 partly because it is a continuation of a project started in my last class and also it would be nice for parents to become active participants in their children's education by learning about the technologies their children are using while at the sane time receiving information that is useful to them. It could be used as a great interactive way to get more parents to attend PTA (Parent Teacher Association) meetings.

This experience in building a wiki is a first for me and I am looking forward to it. I was already familiar with Wikipedia but have never built my own. I am looking forward to the challenge.
